The most significant point of history as far as a personal connection during my days aboard the USS Kilauea AE-26 was that one of my boot camp buddies whom we called Scotty was stationed on board her. That very night when I saw Scotty and got seriously drunk at the Ships Bell I was serving out my term as a mess cook in the galley. Scotty dropped me off at the Killer and I threw up. That was the lesson that taught this Baptist that booze was not something to be desired. At that time the USS Long Beach CGN-9 was moored in the berth to the south of us. If you remember the Star Trek movie The Voyage Home where Chekov was seen outside of carrier it was actually shot at same berth where Kitty Hawk was berthed at at NAS North Island. The actual ship in the location shot was not the Big E rather the sister ship to Kitty Hawk the USS Ranger CV-61.
